About Us
What we said no to
Most shops tell you what they sell. We think you learn more from what we turned down. A few from the last few months, with names removed:
The folding step stool rated for 80 kg. Nicely photographed, very cheap, and the specification said it would carry less than a lot of the adults who'd stand on it. A step stool that can't take a person isn't a bargain; it's a trip to A&E with a delivery date.
The "eco heater" that was a fan. A 400-watt fan heater with a green logo and a claim that it would heat a room for pennies. It would warm the two feet in front of it. The claim was the product; the product was an afterthought.
The 24-piece storage set with six matching lids. Twenty-four containers, eighteen of them useless without a lid you'd never find. You've owned this set. Everyone has.
The knife block with the blades that bent. The listing said "stainless steel". The spec sheet said 2 mm blade stock and a hardness that would roll on a carrot. Sharp on day one, blunt by the weekend.
The "solid oak" shelf that was oak-look laminate over particleboard. The photograph was lovely. The word "solid" was doing a great deal of work.
None of these were hard to spot. They just required reading the specification instead of the photo, and asking the supplier one or two questions they'd rather not answer. That's most of what we do.
What that tells you about what's here
Everything on this site went through the same two questions, and most things we're offered fail at least one.
Does it solve a problem you actually have? Not one invented in the product's own marketing. The drawer that won't stay shut, the cable that's always behind the sofa, the corner that needs light. If we can't describe the problem in one plain sentence without the product's name in it, the product is an answer looking for a question.
Is it built for the use it will really get? Most household things fail through wear, not accident, and wear is predictable if you look at materials, thickness, fixings and ratings before you look at the picture. So that's the order we look in.
The result is a range you can get through in an afternoon, and one where we can answer a question about any item on it.
Reasonably priced, and it doesn't break
There's a curve through every household category. At the bottom, the price is reached by taking things out: thinner material, weaker fixings, a mechanism rated for a fraction of the use it'll see. At the top, a large part of what you pay goes to a name, a shop lease or an advertising budget rather than into the object.
The useful zone is in the middle, and it's narrower than people think, because nobody advertises there. "Reasonably priced and it doesn't break" is a terrible slogan and an excellent product. That's where we buy.
What we won't do
Manufactured urgency. No countdown timers. No "only two left" when there are two hundred. No deadline that resets when you refresh. If something is genuinely about to sell out, we'll say so once.
Claims a storage box can't keep. A kettle won't transform your mornings. What good household things do is disappear: you stop noticing them, because nothing about them irritates you. No wobble, no crack, no replacing it again next spring. It's a small ambition. It compounds.
Going quiet. A parcel that's a fortnight late isn't a good product; it's an apology in transit. So the journey to your door is part of what you're buying: timelines we can actually meet, tracking that tells you something, and a person to email when a parcel goes astray. When one does, we'd rather tell you early than hope you won't notice.
Ask before you buy
Not sure whether something fits the alcove, whether a material will take the use you have in mind, or which of two sizes to take? Email us. You'll get an answer within one working day, drawn from the product's specification rather than a guess, and if the honest answer is "not this one", that's the answer you'll get. We'd rather talk you out of the wrong thing than process the return.
